Easy Ways to Make Darker Rooms Feel Brighter

Some rooms seem darker no matter how many times you turn on the lights. Maybe the windows face the wrong direction for strong daylight. A covered porch, nearby trees, or another part of the house may block some of the sun.

You can't always change where the natural light comes from, but you can make better use of what the room already gets.

Start With What's Blocking the Light

Before buying new fixtures, look at the windows.

Heavy curtains can make a room noticeably darker even when they're open. Switching to lighter panels, raising the curtain rod, or keeping fabric clear of the glass may let in more daylight.

Outside the window, overgrown shrubs or branches can have the same effect. A little pruning may make a bigger difference than changing anything inside.

Just be careful not to remove landscaping that provides useful shade in hot weather.

Add Light at More Than One Height

A single overhead fixture often leaves corners and work areas dim.

Try spreading light around the room instead. A floor lamp beside a chair, a table lamp on a console, and task lighting near a desk or counter can make the space easier to use without making it feel overlit.

This works especially well in living rooms, bedrooms, and finished basements where you may want different amounts of light at different times.

Pay Attention to Bulbs

The fixture isn't the only thing affecting how a room feels.

Check the brightness and color temperature of the bulbs you're using. A bulb that is too dim can make a room feel gloomy, while very cool light can feel harsh in a space meant for relaxing.

You don't necessarily need the brightest bulb available. The goal is enough light for the way the room is actually used.

Look at Surfaces Around the Room

Light-colored walls can help, but repainting isn't the only option.

Mirrors, lighter rugs, glass-topped furniture, and less bulky window coverings can all keep a room from feeling visually heavy. Even moving a tall bookcase away from a window may allow daylight to travel farther into the space.

If you're replacing furniture anyway, consider how much visual space each piece takes up.

Don't Forget the Rooms That Connect to It

Sometimes the problem isn't entirely inside the dark room.

A darker hallway can make an adjoining room feel dimmer. Keeping nearby doorways open, improving lighting in connecting spaces, or using similar wall colors can make the transition feel brighter.

Small changes across two rooms may work better than trying to solve everything with one large light fixture.

Work With the Light You Have

Not every room is going to be sunny, and it doesn't need to be. A room can still feel comfortable and inviting when the lighting is planned around how the space is used.

Start with the windows, spread light around the room, and make a few adjustments before assuming a major renovation is necessary.
